Generator Sizing: What Wattage Do You Actually Need?
alirezarsld@gmail.com·June 18, 2026·5 min read·205 views
Undersizing a generator is the most common mistake. Here's how to get it right.
Running vs starting watts
Motors draw a surge when they start. Add up the running watts of everything you'll power, then add the single largest starting watt figure on top.
A quick example
- Fridge: 700W running, 2200W starting
- Lights + tools: 1500W running
- Recommended generator: ~4400W
Inverter generators are quieter and produce cleaner power for electronics.
