Chainsaw Maintenance: Keep Your BASOO BS-5800 Cutting Like New

A chainsaw is only as good as its upkeep. Five minutes of care before and after each use keeps the BASOO BS-5800 cutting fast, running clean and — most importantly — running safely. Here's the routine the pros follow.

Get the 2-stroke fuel mix right

Two-stroke engines burn a precise oil/petrol blend. Use the ratio in your manual (commonly 25:1 or 50:1), fresh fuel, and quality 2-stroke oil. Stale or wrong-ratio fuel is the number-one cause of starting problems and seized engines.

Before every use

• Chain tension: the chain should snap back against the bar and turn freely by hand — not sag.
• Bar oil: top up the chain-oil reservoir every time you refuel.
• Chain brake: confirm it engages crisply.
• Sharpness: a sharp chain throws chips, not dust. If it makes sawdust, sharpen it.

After every use

1. Clean sawdust from the bar groove and oil holes.
2. Flip the guide bar end-for-end to even out wear.
3. Clean or tap out the air filter — a clogged filter starves the engine and overheats it.
4. Wipe the spark plug; check the gap each season.

Sharpening basics

Use a round file matched to your chain pitch, maintain a consistent 30° angle, and give every tooth the same number of strokes. Lower the depth gauges slightly as the cutters shorten. A correctly sharpened chain cuts faster with less effort and less strain on the engine.

Safety first: always stop the engine and wear cut-resistant gloves before touching the chain.

Storage

For long storage, drain the fuel or add a stabiliser, run the carburettor dry, and lightly oil the bar and chain to prevent rust. Your saw will start first pull next season.
