A Small-Engine Maintenance Schedule for a Long Service Life

Small engines are remarkably durable when maintained — and remarkably short-lived when neglected. The good news: the schedule is short and the parts are cheap. Follow this and your BASOO engine will outlast the equipment it powers.

Every use (or daily)

• Check engine oil level — running low on oil destroys an engine faster than anything else.
• Clear debris from cooling fins and the air intake.
• Look for fuel or oil leaks.

First 20 hours (break-in)

Change the oil after the first 20 hours of a new engine. Break-in produces fine metal particles you want out of the sump early.

Every 50 hours

• Change the engine oil (more often in dusty or hot conditions).
• Clean the air filter; replace if torn or saturated.

Every 100–300 hours

• Replace the spark plug (gasoline) and inspect the ignition.
• Clean the fuel filter/sediment bowl.
• Check and adjust valve clearance — this single step prevents hard starting and power loss.

Seasonal / storage

For storage longer than a month, stabilise the fuel or run the carburettor dry, change the oil, and store in a dry place. Ethanol-blended petrol absorbs water and gums carburettors — fresh fuel is cheap insurance.

Keep a logbook of hours and services. It's the easiest way to catch problems early and protect resale value.
